A1 · Nouns and adjectives
Género, artículos y plurales
Gender in Spanish is grammar, not biology: a table is feminine and a book is masculine for no reason you can reason about. What you can do is learn the endings that predict it, learn each new noun with its article attached, and memorise the short list that breaks the pattern.
The four articles
| Definite | Indefinite | |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | el libro | un libro |
| feminine singular | la mesa | una mesa |
| masculine plural | los libros | unos libros |
| feminine plural | las mesas | unas mesas |
Endings that predict the gender
| Usually masculine | Usually feminine |
|---|---|
| -o: el libro | -a: la casa |
| -or: el profesor | -ción: la canción |
| -ma from Greek: el problema | -sión: la televisión |
| -aje: el viaje | -dad, -tad: la ciudad, la libertad |
| days and months: el lunes | -umbre: la costumbre |
The list that breaks it
Short enough to learn in a sitting, and every one of them is a word you will use.
- el día, el mapa, el problema, el idioma, el clima, el sistema
- la mano, la foto, la moto, la radio
- el agua, el hambre — feminine, but el for pronunciation
Why el agua and not la agua
A feminine noun starting with a stressed a takes el to avoid two a sounds colliding. The noun stays feminine, so the adjective does too: el agua fría, and in the plural it goes back to normal: las aguas.
- El agua está fría.The water is cold.
- Las aguas del río.The waters of the river.
Making the plural
| Ends in | Add | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a vowel | -s | casa → casas |
| a consonant | -es | profesor → profesores |
| -z | -ces | lápiz → lápices |
| stressed -s | no change | el lunes → los lunes |
When Spanish uses the article and English does not
Spanish puts the definite article in front of general ideas, languages, days and body parts. Leaving it out is one of the most audible learner errors.
- Me gusta el café.I like coffee.
- Los lunes trabajo.On Mondays I work.
- Me duele la cabeza. My head hurts.
