Las palabras interrogativas
Asking questions is what a beginner needs most and what textbooks cover fastest. Two things deserve real attention: the difference between qué and cuál, which does not match English what and which, and the accent, which is what separates a question from a statement in writing.

Qué against cuál
Before a noun, always qué, even where English says which: ¿qué libro prefieres? Before ser, Spanish uses cuál to ask for a specific item and qué to ask for a definition. ¿Cuál es tu número? asks for the number; ¿qué es un número? asks what a number is.

With a preposition in front
Spanish never leaves the preposition at the end. Where English says who are you going with, Spanish says with whom.

The accent is the question
The same words exist without an accent as connectors. The accent marks the asking, including in indirect questions where there are no question marks at all.
- ¿Dónde vives?Where do you live?
