A2 · Nouns and adjectives
Comparativos y superlativos
Comparison is built from three fixed frames plus a short list of adjectives that refuse to take más. What trips learners up is not the frames but the small print around them: de instead of que before numbers, mayor being about age rather than size, and the -ísimo ending that lets you intensify without comparing anything at all.
The three frames
| Meaning | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| more than | más + adjetivo + que | Lima es más grande que Cusco |
| less than | menos + adjetivo + que | Hoy hace menos frío que ayer |
| as as | tan + adjetivo + como | Este texto es tan difícil como el otro |
| as much as | tanto/a/os/as + nombre + como | Tengo tantos libros como tú |
Four irregulars
These never take más.
| Adjective | Comparative |
|---|---|
| bueno | mejor |
| malo | peor |
| grande (age) | mayor |
| pequeño (age) | menor |
The superlative
Article plus más plus adjective, and de where English uses in.
- Es el texto más difícil del libro. It is the hardest text in the book.
- Es la mejor panadería del barrio. It is the best bakery in the neighbourhood.
- Es dificilísimo. It is extremely hard. · -ísimo, the absolute superlative
Que or de before a number
Comparisons take que, but before a quantity Spanish switches to de. Más de veinte, never más que veinte, unless you are contradicting: no gasté más que veinte means I spent only twenty.
- Hay más de veinte personas. There are more than twenty people.
- No tengo más que veinte soles.I only have twenty soles.
Mayor and menor are about age, not size
Mayor and menor compare age or abstract quantities. For physical size, más grande and más pequeño are normal and correct.
- Mi hermano mayor. My older brother.
- Una casa más grande.A bigger house. · not mayor
The -ísimo ending
An absolute superlative: not more than anything, just extremely. Drop the final vowel and add -ísimo, adjusting spelling where the sound requires it.
| Adjective | Absolute superlative |
|---|---|
| difícil | dificilísimo |
| rico | riquísimo |
| largo | larguísimo |
| fácil | facilísimo |
