Presente: verbos irregulares
The present tense looks chaotic at first sight and is almost entirely predictable underneath. Nearly every irregular verb belongs to one of four families, and the reason for the change is phonetic: it happens where the stress falls. Learn to spot the family and you can conjugate verbs you have never seen before.
Stem changes: the boot
The vowel changes in every form except nosotros. Draw a boot around the table and the change happens inside it.

Tener, venir and decir change the stem and the yo form.

The truly irregular
Four verbs follow no pattern, and they are the four you use most.

Why the boot exists
The change happens where the stress falls. In quiero the stress lands on the stem, and the vowel breaks; in queremos it lands on the ending, so the stem is left alone. That is why nosotros always escapes, and why the pattern is not something you have to memorise form by form.
