Estar + gerundio: lo que pasa ahora
Two words: estar in the present, then the verb ending in -ando or -iendo. It is the most useful structure there is for describing a picture, because everything in a photo is mid-action. Spanish uses it far less than English does for the future — vamos mañana, not estamos yendo mañana — but for what is happening right now it is exactly right.
How to build it
| Infinitive | Gerund | Example |
|---|---|---|
| hablar | hablando | La mujer está hablando. |
| comer | comiendo | Los niños están comiendo. |
| vivir | viviendo | Está viviendo en Lima. |
The irregulars worth knowing
Only a handful, and they are all common.
| Infinitive | Gerund | Why |
|---|---|---|
| leer | leyendo | i between vowels becomes y |
| oír | oyendo | same reason |
| dormir | durmiendo | o becomes u |
| pedir | pidiendo | e becomes i |
| decir | diciendo | e becomes i |
| ir | yendo | irregular on its own |
