Lo que, lo de, lo importante: el neutro lo

Spanish has a third gender that only ever has one word in it: lo. It cannot go in front of a noun, because there are no neuter nouns. It goes in front of everything else — an adjective, a clause, a name — and turns it into a thing you can talk about. Once that clicks, lo que against el que stops being a guess: el que replaces a masculine noun you both know, lo que replaces something that was never a noun at all.

lo — there is no noun behind it

  • Lo que me dijo fue muy raro. — the thing he said
  • Lo de tu hermano me sorprendió. — that business with your brother
  • Lo importante es escuchar. — the important thing
  • Llegó tarde, lo cual molestó a todos. — which, the whole fact
  • No sabes lo difícil que fue. — how difficult

el / la — a noun is behind it

  • El que me dijo eso fue Carlos. — the man who
  • La que llegó tarde fue Ana. — the woman who
  • El de la camisa azul es mi primo. — the one in the blue shirt
  • La casa en la que vivo es vieja. — the house
  • El libro del que te hablé. — the book

Lo que against el que

Ask one question: is there a noun it stands for? If yes, the article agrees with that noun. If no — if it stands for a whole idea, an event, a situation — it is lo.

  • No entendí lo que dijo.I did not understand what he said. · the content, never a noun
  • No entendí al que habló primero.I did not understand the man who spoke first. · a person
  • Lo que compré fue caro. What I bought was expensive. · the purchase in general
  • El que compré fue caro. The one I bought was expensive. · the book, the coat, whatever we were discussing

Lo de

Lo plus de plus almost anything makes a topic out of it. There is no English word for this and it is used constantly.

  • Lo de ayer fue increíble. That business yesterday was unbelievable.
  • ¿Y lo de tu hermano? And what about your brother's situation?
  • Lo del alquiler lo hablamos mañana. We'll talk about the rent thing tomorrow.

Lo plus an adjective

It makes the quality itself into a noun. The adjective stays masculine singular, whatever it describes.

  • Lo importante es participar. The important thing is to take part.
  • Lo difícil fue empezar. The hard part was starting.
  • Lo bueno de vivir aquí es el clima. The good thing about living here is the weather.
  • Hizo lo posible. He did what he could.

Lo que against lo cual

Both refer back to a whole clause, but lo cual only ever comes after a comma, and cannot open a sentence.

  • Llegó tarde, lo que molestó a todos. He arrived late, which annoyed everyone. · correct
  • Llegó tarde, lo cual molestó a todos. He arrived late, which annoyed everyone. · also correct, more formal
  • Lo que me molesta es el ruido. What bothers me is the noise. · lo cual is impossible here

Lo plus adjective plus que

A structure with no English equivalent, and one of the most useful things at B2. Here the adjective does agree, because it still describes the noun.

  • No sabes lo difícil que fue.You have no idea how hard it was.
  • Con lo cara que es la vida aquí…Given how expensive life is here… · cara agrees with vida
  • Me sorprendió lo bien que habla.I was surprised at how well he speaks.

Mistakes to avoid

El que vino era mi tío.

There is a noun behind it, so the article agrees.

El que me dijo fue muy raro.

The thing said is not a noun, so lo.

La importante es escuchar.

Lo plus adjective stays neuter, always.

Lo cual me molesta es el ruido.

Lo cual cannot open a sentence.

No sabes lo difícil fue.

Watch out

Lo is also the direct object pronoun: lo vi, I saw him or it. Same two letters, unrelated job. Context tells them apart instantly — a pronoun sits next to a verb, the neuter sits in front of an adjective, a clause or de.
