B2 · Pronouns
Que, quien, el que, lo que, cuyo
Que does most of the work, and for that reason students use it everywhere. The exam rewards the distinctions: quien only for people, el que and el cual after a preposition or when you need to mark which of two nouns you mean, lo que for a whole idea rather than a thing, and cuyo for possession — a word English speakers almost never reach for because whose feels like a question.
The set
| Relative | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| que | almost everything, people and things | El libro que compré. |
| quien / quienes | people, after a preposition or between commas | La mujer con quien hablé. |
| el que / la que / los que | after a preposition, or to pick one out | La casa en la que vivo. |
| el cual / la cual | the formal version of el que | El informe según el cual… |
| lo que | a whole idea, not a noun | No entendí lo que dijo. |
| cuyo / cuya / cuyos / cuyas | possession | El autor cuya novela leímos. |
Cuyo agrees with what follows
This is the one that catches everyone. Cuyo does not agree with the owner; it agrees with the thing owned.
- El autor cuya novela leímos. The author whose novel we read. · novela is feminine, so cuya
- La escritora cuyos libros ganaron el premio. The writer whose books won the prize. · libros is masculine plural, so cuyos
Lo que, not que
When the thing you are referring back to is an idea, a situation or a whole clause, Spanish needs lo que.
- Llegó tarde, lo que molestó a todos. He arrived late, which annoyed everyone.
- Lo que me sorprende es su reacción.What surprises me is his reaction.
- No entendí lo que dijo.I did not understand what he said.
With and without commas
Commas change the meaning, exactly as they do in English.
- Los alumnos que estudiaron aprobaron. The students who studied passed. · only some of them studied
- Los alumnos, que estudiaron, aprobaron. The students, who had studied, passed. · all of them studied
