A2 · Everyday structures
Creo que, parece que, quizás
In an exam you get asked things nobody could know for certain: who these people are, how they feel, what happened before. Freezing is the worst answer. These openings let you say something reasonable without claiming it is true, and they all take the indicative, so there is no subjunctive to worry about.
Safe at A2 — all indicative
- Creo que son amigos.
- Me parece que están en un parque.
- Parece que están contentos.
- Quizás están esperando el autobús.
- Probablemente llegaron hace poco.
- Puede ser su hermano.
Leave these for later
- Es posible que estén… — needs the subjunctive
- Puede que sean… — needs the subjunctive
- Dudo que… — needs the subjunctive
- Quizás estuvieran… — past subjunctive, well beyond A2
Always add the reason
A guess with a because behind it scores far better than a guess alone. It shows you can link two ideas, which is what is being assessed.
- Está contenta.She is happy. · weak
- Creo que está contenta porque está sonriendo.I think she is happy because she is smiling. · much better
- Parece que son compañeros de trabajo porque todos llevan uniforme. They seem to be workmates because they are all in uniform.
Before and after
Guessing about the past and the future is where you show two more tenses without being asked for them.
- Antes de esta foto creo que fueron al mercado.
- Quizás llegaron hace unos minutos.
- Después probablemente van a comer juntos.
- Creo que van a volver a casa.
