La voz pasiva y sus alternativas
Spanish has a true passive with ser plus a participle, and the exam expects you to recognise and form it. But it is worth knowing that in ordinary Spanish it is much rarer than in English: where English says the bridge was built, Spanish more often says se construyó el puente. Add estar plus participle, which describes a resulting state rather than an action, and you have the three structures that get confused.
The three structures
| Structure | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ser + participio | the action itself, often with an agent | El puente fue construido por los romanos. |
| se + verbo | the same action, no agent named | Se construyó el puente en 1920. |
| estar + participio | the state that resulted | El puente está construido. |
The participle agrees
With ser and estar, the participle behaves like an adjective and agrees with the subject.
- La casa fue vendida el año pasado. The house was sold last year.
- Los documentos fueron enviados ayer. The documents were sent yesterday.
- Las puertas están cerradas. The doors are closed.
Naming the agent
When you say who did it, use por. This is the one case where the true passive is clearly preferred.
- La novela fue escrita por García Márquez. The novel was written by García Márquez.
- El acuerdo fue firmado por los dos gobiernos. The agreement was signed by both governments.
Why se is usually better
With no agent to name, se sounds natural and the true passive sounds translated. Compare:
- Se venden pisos.Flats for sale. · what a sign actually says
- Pisos son vendidos. · grammatical, but nobody says it
- Se habla español.Spanish spoken here.
Mistakes to avoid

The participle agrees with the subject.
El puente está construido por los romanos.
