El tiempo con hacer

Talking about the weather is one of the first things a learner needs and one of the easiest places to translate word for word and get it wrong. English says it is cold; Spanish says it makes cold. Three different structures cover almost everything.

Three structures, not one

StructureUsed forExample
hacer + nounmost weatherhace sol, hace frío, hace viento
a verb on its ownrain, snow, dawnllueve, nieva, amanece
estar + adjectivethe sky right nowestá nublado, está despejado

Hacer with a noun

Because what follows hacer is a noun, the intensifier is mucho, not muy. This is the single most common weather mistake and it comes straight from English.

  • hace sol
  • hace calor
  • hace frío
  • hace viento
  • hace fresco
  • hace buen tiempo
  • hace mal tiempo
  • Hoy hace mucho frío.It is very cold today.
  • En la costa hace buen tiempo casi todo el año.On the coast the weather is good almost all year.

Weather verbs

These only ever appear in the third person singular. There is no yo llueve, because nobody rains.

  • Llueve mucho en enero. It rains a lot in January.
  • Está lloviendo. It is raining. · right now
  • Nieva en la sierra. It snows in the highlands.

Tener for people

Hacer describes the weather. When it is a person who is cold or hot, Spanish switches to tener. Estoy frío would describe your body temperature to a doctor, not your comfort.

  • Hace frío.It is cold. · the weather
  • Tengo frío.I am cold. · me
  • El café está frío.The coffee is cold. · a thing

Asking about it

  • ¿Qué tiempo hace? What is the weather like?
  • ¿Cómo está el clima? How is the weather? · common in Latin America
  • ¿Va a llover?Is it going to rain?

Examples

  • Hace sol.It is sunny.
  • Hace frío en la montaña.It is cold in the mountains.
  • Hoy llueve mucho. It rains a lot today.
