El o un: elegir el artículo

Once you know whether a noun is masculine or feminine, a second question remains: el or un, or nothing at all? English is a poor guide here. "I like coffee" has no article, Spanish needs one: me gusta el café. "She is a teacher" has one, Spanish drops it: es profesora. This lesson is about that choice, not about gender — for el mesa versus la mesa, see the lesson on gender.

el · la · los · las — we both know which one

  • Something already mentioned: Compré un libro. El libro es caro.
  • Something unique: el sol, el presidente, la capital
  • A whole category: Me gusta el café. Los peruanos comen mucho arroz.
  • Body parts and clothes: Me duele la cabeza. Ponte el abrigo.
  • Clock times and days: a las ocho, el lunes
  • With a title, talking about someone: El señor Ramos llegó.

un · una · unos · unas — new, or one of several

  • First mention of something: Hay un problema.
  • One among many: Necesito una silla.
  • With a describing adjective: Es un profesor excelente.
  • unos / unas meaning roughly: unas veinte unidades
  • Never with otro, medio, cierto, tal: otro café, media hora

Where English misleads you

These four cases account for most article mistakes made by English speakers. In each one, English and Spanish disagree.

EnglishSpanishWhat happens
I like coffeeMe gusta **el** caféSpanish adds the article for a whole category
She is a teacherEs Ø profesoraSpanish drops it after ser + profession
He is a very good teacherEs **un** profesor muy buenoIt comes back once there is an adjective
I wash my handsMe lavo **las** manosBody parts take the article, not the possessive

When no article is correct

Leaving it out is a real choice, not an oversight. These are the common cases.

  • After ser, with a profession, nationality or religion: Soy peruano. Es ingeniero.
  • After hay when the noun is plural or uncountable: Hay leche. Hay problemas.
  • Before otro, medio, cierto, tal, mil, cien: otro día, media hora, cien personas
  • In many fixed pairs after a preposition: en casa, con paciencia, por teléfono, a pie
  • Before a quantity you are not counting: Necesito ayuda. Tengo tiempo.

Un problema, el problema

The same noun takes either article depending on whether the listener already knows which one you mean. This is the single most useful idea in the lesson: the article tracks shared knowledge, not the noun.

  • Hay un problema con el pedido. There is a problem with the order. · first mention
  • El problema es el abastecimiento. The problem is supply. · now we both know which
  • Busco un departamento.I am looking for a flat. · any flat
  • Busco el departamento de Ana.I am looking for Ana's flat. · one specific flat

al and del

El is the only article that contracts. A + el becomes al, de + el becomes del. La, los and las never contract.

  • Voy al mercado.I am going to the market.
  • Vengo del trabajo.I am coming from work.
  • Voy a la tienda.I am going to the shop. · no contraction

Mistakes to avoid

Me gusta café.

Me gusta el café.

A whole category takes the definite article.

Ella es una profesora.

Ella es profesora.

No article after ser with a bare profession.

Es profesora excelente.

Es una profesora excelente.

The adjective brings the article back.

Me lavo mis manos.

Me lavo las manos.

Body parts take the article, not the possessive.

Necesito un otro café.

Necesito otro café.

Otro never takes un.

Voy a el mercado.

Voy al mercado.

A + el always contracts.

Watch out

El and un in front of a feminine noun starting with a stressed a — el agua, un águila — do not make it masculine. The adjective stays feminine: el agua fría, and the plural goes back to normal: las aguas.

Try it
