La liebre y la tortuga

La liebre corre más rápido que todos los animales del bosque. Ella lo sabe y lo dice cada día.

The hare runs faster than every animal in the forest. She knows it, and she says so every day.

—Nadie corre como yo —repite—. Nadie.

“Nobody runs like me,” she repeats. “Nobody.”

Un día, la tortuga la escucha y responde en voz baja:

One day the tortoise hears her and answers in a low voice:

—Yo puedo ganarte.

“I can beat you.”

Los animales se ríen. La liebre se ríe más fuerte que nadie.

The animals laugh. The hare laughs louder than any of them.

—¿Tú? Está bien. Mañana corremos hasta el río.

“You? All right. Tomorrow we race to the river.”

Al día siguiente empieza la carrera. La liebre sale rapidísimo. En un minuto ya no ve a la tortuga. Mira hacia atrás y no hay nadie.

The next day the race begins. The hare sets off extremely fast. In a minute she can no longer see the tortoise. She looks back and there is nobody there.

—Tengo mucho tiempo —piensa—. Voy a descansar un poco.

“I have plenty of time,” she thinks. “I am going to rest for a while.”

Se echa debajo de un árbol y se duerme.

She lies down under a tree and falls asleep.

La tortuga camina. Camina despacio, pero no para. Pasa al lado de la liebre dormida y sigue.

The tortoise walks. She walks slowly, but she does not stop. She goes past the sleeping hare and carries on.

Cuando la liebre abre los ojos, el sol está bajo. Corre como nunca, con el corazón fuerte y las patas rápidas.

When the hare opens her eyes, the sun is low. She runs like never before, with her heart pounding and her legs quick.

Llega al río justo a tiempo. La tortuga ya está del otro lado, tranquila, mirándola.

She reaches the river just in time. The tortoise is already on the other side, calm, looking back at her.

—¿Cómo? —pregunta la liebre.

“How?” asks the hare.

—Tú eres más rápida —dice la tortuga—. Pero yo no me detuve.

“You are faster,” says the tortoise. “But I did not stop.”
