El pastor y el lobo

Un pastor joven cuidaba las ovejas en la montaña, lejos del pueblo. El trabajo era tranquilo y los días eran largos.

A young shepherd looked after the sheep on the mountain, far from the village. The work was quiet and the days were long.

Una tarde se aburrió tanto que tuvo una idea. Bajó corriendo hacia las casas y gritó:

One afternoon he got so bored that he had an idea. He ran down towards the houses and shouted:

—¡El lobo! ¡El lobo se lleva las ovejas!

“The wolf! The wolf is taking the sheep!”

Los vecinos dejaron todo y subieron con palos. Cuando llegaron, no había ningún lobo. Solo estaba el pastor, riéndose.

The neighbours dropped everything and came up with sticks. When they arrived, there was no wolf. Only the shepherd, laughing.

—Era una broma —dijo.

“It was a joke,” he said.

Nadie se rió con él.

Nobody laughed with him.

A la semana siguiente hizo lo mismo. Los vecinos volvieron a subir, más lentos y más molestos. Otra vez no había nada.

The following week he did the same thing. The neighbours came up again, slower and more annoyed. Once more there was nothing.

—Ya no nos llames si no es verdad —le dijo una señora.

“Do not call us again if it is not true,” an old woman told him.

El tercer día, el lobo apareció de verdad. Bajó entre los árboles, tranquilo, y las ovejas empezaron a correr.

On the third day, the wolf appeared for real. It came down through the trees, calm, and the sheep began to run.

El pastor gritó con todas sus fuerzas. Gritó hasta quedarse sin voz.

The shepherd shouted with all his might. He shouted until he lost his voice.

En el pueblo lo escucharon. Levantaron la cabeza, se miraron entre ellos, y volvieron a su trabajo.

Down in the village they heard him. They looked up, glanced at one another, and went back to work.
