B2 · Verbs
Correlación de tiempos
When the main verb moves into the past, everything after it moves too. Present becomes imperfect, future becomes conditional, present subjunctive becomes imperfect subjunctive. It sounds mechanical, and largely it is — which is why it is worth learning as a table and then forgetting about.
Indicative
| Main verb in the present | Main verb in the past |
|---|---|
| Dice que **viene**. | Dijo que **venía**. |
| Dice que **vino**. | Dijo que **había venido**. |
| Dice que **vendrá**. | Dijo que **vendría**. |
| Dice que **va a venir**. | Dijo que **iba a venir**. |
Subjunctive
| Main verb in the present | Main verb in the past |
|---|---|
| Quiero que **vengas**. | Quería que **vinieras**. |
| Es posible que **llueva**. | Era posible que **lloviera**. |
| Te pido que **lo hagas**. | Te pedí que **lo hicieras**. |
| Dudo que **haya llegado**. | Dudaba que **hubiera llegado**. |
When it does not shift
If what was said is still true now, the present can stay. This is a choice, not an error, and it is worth knowing that both appear.
- Me dijo que tiene tres hijos. He told me he has three children. · still true
- Me dijo que tenía tres hijos. He told me he had three children. · neutral, always safe
Conditional sentences
The one that appears in every NSE Level 5 paper: an unreal past condition.
- Si hubiera estudiado más, habría obtenido una A.If I had studied more, I would have got an A.
- Si tuviera tiempo, iría.If I had time, I would go. · unreal present
- Si tengo tiempo, iré.If I have time, I will go. · real, and no subjunctive
